Heikki Viinikainen

Designer Heikki Viinikainen (born in 1978) studied ceramics and glass design at Kuopio Academy of Design, graduating in 2010. After graduation he moved to Nuutajärvi Glass Village and founded his own design studio, Studio Heikki Viinikainen.

Studio Heikki Viinikainen creates and produces glass for daily use in small-series production and limited editions. The collection also contains unique art glass objects. Each object is made by hand in Nuutajärvi Glass Village, in the hot shop of a glass cooperative called Lasikomppania.

In addition his own glass collection, Heikki Viinikainen has done exhibition design for the Finnish Glass Museum, has had design cooperation with Puuni Lighting&Furniture and taught product design to glass students at Tavastia Vocational College. In 2011 Heikki Viinikäinen joined the Nuutajärvi Gallery Cooperative NuGO and moved to Nuutajärvi.

Heikki Viinikainen describes how he relates to glass: “Besides trying to strike a balance between shape, material and function, for objects I seek a dimension that inspires my thoughts. What makes glass a special material is its many possibilities, ranging from sensitivity to rich use of colour. In a unique way glass combines colour, shape and space that take on life through light. The glass material always awakens my interest and leads me to new explorations in the glass world.”

Viinikainen has taken part in several group exhibitions in Finland. He also was a participant in the international touring exhibition Finnish Glass Art 2005‒2010 arranged by the Finnish Glass Museum. He held a solo exhibition at Galleria Carree in Kuopio, Finland in 2009. Glass art objects made by Heikki Viinikainen are also included in the collections of the Finnish Glass Museum.
